Taurine is a non-essential sulphur-containing amino acid-like substance. Taurine interacts with glycine and GABA. It can be made in the body from cysteine and methionine. Vitamins A, B3 and B6, and the minerals zinc and manganese are also important in the production of taurine.

Taurine is abundant in the body.
An adult body contains about 1 gram of taurine per kilogram of body weight.
Taurine works together with glycine and GABA. For older children and adults, taurine is a semi-essential nutrient and is synthesised mainly in the liver and brain from the sulphur-containing amino acids cysteine and methionine. Vitamins A, B3 and B6, and the minerals zinc and manganese are involved in this conversion.
Babies and small children cannot synthesise taurine themselves yet; for them, taurine is an essential nutrient.
The dosage is about 100 to 150 milligrams per kilogram of body weight per day for adults and for children about 50 to 75 milligrams of taurine per kilogram per day.
The OSL (Observed Safe Level) for adults is calculated at 3 grams per day.
