The word 'immune system' is a much-used term when it comes to human health, particularly in autumn and winter. In this period, you are more susceptible to the flu or a cold.
It is not surprising that our immune system receives extra attention during these months, but we shouldn't forget that a well-functioning immune system is important all year round!
Tips to support the immune system:
To make sure your body gets the nutrients it needs, you will have to eat or drink the right things. Macronutrients, which are the nutrients our body needs in large quantities, are complex carbohydrates, good fats and proteins. Our body also needs micronutrients, which are vitamins, minerals and trace elements. These nutrients it needs in smaller quantities.
Unfortunately, shop shelves are full of unhealthy temptations containing nutrients that are less good for us. This ultimately also affects our immune system. So the first step is to improve your dietary habits. How? Eat natural, unprocessed foods and eat as varied as possible. You can vary endlessly with vegetables, fruit, fresh herbs, nuts, seeds and good-quality fish and meat. In other words: go back to basics! If this is a big change compared to your normal diet, you may find that your body protests, but once you get through this, you will only thank yourself. You will feel fitter and more energetic, both physically and mentally. This also benefits your immune system.
But despite a pure and varied diet, it may be difficult to get all the nutrients necessary for normal functioning of the immune system. Nutritional supplements can be a good addition. There are several vitamins and minerals to help support the immune system. Vitamins that support the immune system include vitamins C and D, but also lesser known vitamins such as A, B6, B12 and folate. Minerals with a supporting effect on the immune system are zinc, iron, copper and selenium.
Our product range comprises Cell Essentials Powder, which contains all the above vitamins and minerals and more. You can also opt for the Immune Support, Vitamin C Essentials or Vitamin A D & Omegas.
Our immune system is a complex system in which many factors act together to protect your body. It is not an organ like the brain, liver or heart, but more an interaction of cells and tissues. The immune system can be roughly divided into 3 components: the physical barrier, non-specific immunity, and specific immunity.
The first line of defence is the physical barrier between your body and the outside world. One such barrier is the skin, which protects your body against harmful external substances. Other barriers are the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract and the digestive system. Everything you ingest through the nose or mouth does not enter the body yet. Only when something is absorbed into the bloodstream is it actually in the body. As many pathogens can enter through the nose or mouth, a good first line of defence is paramount!
The second barrier is non-specific immunity. This is also called the general immune system. Together with the physical barrier, this forms what is called the innate immune system. From when you were born, your body has the mechanisms to keep pathogens out and to fight them should they enter your body nevertheless.
The third and final barrier is specific immunity. As the name suggests, this immunity targets specific pathogens. Unlike the second barrier (innate non-specific immunity), you are not born with specific immunity. You develop this throughout your life when you are exposed to all kinds of pathogens.
When such a pathogen manages to get through the physical barrier, it comes into contact with the general immune system (innate non-specific immunity). When this immune system cannot repel the attack in time, specific immunity is activated. After the pathogen has been fought, the cells of the specific immune system produce so-called 'memory cells'. When your body comes into contact with the same pathogen again at some later point in time, your body immediately steps into action. This is also the idea behind vaccination.
